Controversy 3 – Environmental Justice

Environmentalism has had the image of being a pursuit of the middle class, while the brunt of toxic environmental abuses and their related health effects has historically fallen on the poor and the disenfranchised in the US and around the world.

In 1979 a young sociologist by the name of Robert Bullard, having recently received his PhD, discovered that almost all the toxic waste sites, dumps, landfills, and incinerators in Houston were located in African-American neighborhoods, even though that population made up only 25% of the city’s total. This and subsequent research led Bullard to identify a condition known as environmental racism, and advocate for what came to be known as “environmental justice” Today, the “father of environmental justice” Dr. Robert Bullard is Dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University.

Using at least 3 sources other than our e-textbook, write a 1 – 2 page paper answering the following two questions:

  1. Why do you think communities of color, indigenous communities, and others haven’t been more involved in the major environmental movements? Is that changing and, if so, what are some examples of such groups and individuals coming forward and becoming new leaders in the environmental movement?
  2. Do you think environmental racism is still an issue in the US? Research and report on an example in the US where accusations of environmental racism, or calls for environmental justice, have been made, covering the situation, the arguments being made, whether or not you feel the accusations are/were justified, and what if anything is being done to resolve the conflict.
