SELF-OWNERSHIP

SELF-OWNERSHIP
‘The key dividing line in the debate about self-ownership is not between compatibilists and incompatibilists but between libertarian
self-ownership and all the other theories. Only libertarian self-ownership is plausible, because only libertarian self-ownership takes
seriously the importance of foundational self-ownership rights.’ Is this true?
Notes
This Essay asks you to assess libertarian self-ownership (which you may take to be Nozick’s theory of self-ownership). It makes a
claim about the superior plausibility of libertarian self-ownership, and gives a reason for that claim. You need to assess the reason
given, and the assumption that self-ownership rights are ‘foundational’. You will need to explain what you take this to mean, and
whether or not you accept this assumption. It is open to you to agree, or disagree, with the claim, but you will need to spend most of
your time giving specific reasons for your judgements.
All the readings from the self-ownership chapter will be relevant, but you should particularly focus on Nozick’s own work and the
criticism of his theory in Cohen and Otsuka.
