When asked to define broad terms such as freedom or justice my definition will differ from others. Definitions can be based on emotions or simply without justification. What’s interesting is when we are stuck in an ethical dilemma, there may not be a right answer. As difficult as it may be for me to accept the lack of a “right” answer, it’s about the finding the best solution that fits my principles without forfeiting my integrity. I believe this is what Cooper (2012) means when he describes ethics as an active process (p.17). Different levels of reflection, consequences, and ultimately action must be taken to approach an ethical dilemma, but not at the cost of our fundamentals.

The current water crisis in Flint Michigan is an example of an ethical dilemma. Recently, released emails suggest the state knew one year ago about the discrepancy in the water and gave state employees bottled water and provided them with water coolers. This was done before the residents were advised of the contaminated water. Many questions rise from this dilemma – Should safe water be provided to the state employees? How will the public feel when they find out? Are the lives of the state employees more important than the residents? Arguably, this might may or may not have been the “right” solution but it might be a good reaction for the dilemma, I just wonder what hierarchy of fundamental principles were used to rationalize leaving the residents out in the cold?
