Many aquatic invertebrates such as squid, lobster, and crayfish are capable of very rapid muscle activity and body movement. They respond to stimuli such as touch just as rapidly as do terrestrial vertebrates. These capabilities of some, but certainly not all, aquatic invertebrate animals occur even though the animals lack myelination of their nerve axons. Terrestrial animals have myelin covering many of their axons.Explain how these fast-moving invertebrates can have rapid responses to stimuli and rapid onset of muscle movement in the complete absence of myelination of their axons. Include a discussion of the structure of their axons that allows such rapid activity and explain how it works.
