If a cell with 2n=4 chromosomes failed to separate the homologous chromosome pairs correctly during meiois I, so that one pair went to one daughter cell and the other cell received no copy, how many chromosomes would be found in each of the four cells that result at the end of meiosis II? Two cells would contain 3 chromosomes, and 2 cells would contain 1 chromosome at the end of meiosis.

The answer is written in blue; can someone please explain why this is correct?
